About 30 firefighters tackled the Keel House blaze at its height after a 00:38 call on Sunday. The stop came at 6.19pm, and a fire investigation with police is under way.

Residents were evacuated from Keel House, a block of flats on Dorchester Road in Weymouth, after a fire broke out overnight into Sunday 20 September. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 00:38. The fire started on the top floor and spread into the roof space. At the height of the incident the service had eight appliances at the scene. That included a support unit and an aerial ladder platform.

In an update at about 10:00 on Sunday, the service said:

  • three appliances and an aerial ladder platform remained at the scene
  • road closures were still in place
  • people were advised to avoid the area

Update, 22 September: the service has now published its own incident report. It confirms:

  • crews from Weymouth (two appliances), Portland, Dorchester, Blandford, Bridport and Maiden Newton attended, with a support unit from Hamworthy and the aerial ladder platform from Yeovil
  • at the height of the incident approximately 30 firefighters were in attendance
  • a full evacuation was carried out
  • breathing apparatus crews used main lines, the aerial ladder platform and a covering jet to extinguish the fire
  • the stop message, meaning the fire no longer needed more resources, came at 6.19pm on Sunday, nearly 18 hours after the first call
  • the service is “working alongside the police to carry out a fire investigation”

The service has still published nothing on whether anyone was hurt, or on when residents will be able to return. This page will be updated again if it does.

The building

Keel House is at 68a Dorchester Road, on the main road between Weymouth town centre and Dorchester. The government’s energy certificate register lists 32 flats at the address, numbered 1 to 32. (Find an energy certificate, DT4 7FA)

The residents’ own appeals

Three people who lived at Keel House have started GoFundMe appeals since the fire. Their pages are the only first-hand accounts published so far, and the photographs on this page come from them. We have gone through all three in Keel House fire: £760 raised by three Weymouth appeals. The figures below were checked on 23 September.

Ola Szwan is raising money for herself, her partner Craig and his father, who shared a flat in the block. She writes that the three of them lost “our home, all belongings and documents”, and that Craig and his father had been there 11 years. Her appeal, All the support will go towards helping us restart our life, had raised £510 of a £1,000 target from 14 donations. She says she also wants to help neighbours “who have also been left with nothing”.

Joanne Pearce is raising money for her nephew Ryan, who has Stargardt disease and is legally blind. She writes that he relies on specialist technology and equipment to get about independently, and that most of it was damaged or lost, leaving him with “his phone and the clothes he was wearing”. Her appeal, Please help Ryan after a devastating fire, had raised £180 of a £500 target from three donations. The photograph at the top of this page was posted on it.

Martin James lived in flat 30, which he describes as one of the flats closest to the fire. He writes that he is “probably not going to have the opportunity to retrieve my belongings due to damage and the unstable structure surrounding them”, and that he wants to raise “just enough to cover myself for a month”. His appeal, Help with restoring my life, had raised £70 of a £500 target from three donations.

What it means for you

The fire service’s advice on Sunday morning was to avoid the area while closures are in place. Dorchester Road is the main road north out of the town centre, so allow extra time for any journey through that side of Weymouth until the closures lift. Our Dorset roadworks and travel page covers the county’s planned closures.

If you have been evacuated and have nowhere to stay, Dorset Council’s emergency housing help page sets out what to do, including how to reach the housing team out of hours.

The fire service’s own account is now published as an incident report on its news and incidents page, and the update at the top of this story is taken from it.

How this compares

For scale: the fire service’s own record of the King Street building fire in Weymouth in January 2025 shows around 60 firefighters at its height, with about 25 people displaced as a precaution. (DWFRS incident report, 4 January 2025) Sunday’s peak of about 30 firefighters is half that response. It is still one of the largest deployments to a Weymouth building the service has reported since.

What we do not know yet

  • What caused the fire. The service says it is working alongside the police on a fire investigation, and has published nothing yet on the cause.
  • Whether anyone was hurt. No injuries have been reported by the service, which is not the same as none having happened.
  • When the 32 flats’ residents can go home. That depends on the state of the roof and top floor, which the service has not yet described.
